SS-31 / Elamipretide: A Cardiolipin Research Primer

Platinum Bio Labs EditorialJuly 2026
SS-31 Research Peptide research primer

How SS-31 is studied at mitochondrial membranes and why an approved drug does not validate a third-party research vial.

SS-31 is an aromatic-cationic tetrapeptide also known as elamipretide. It is studied for interactions with cardiolipin-rich inner mitochondrial membranes and associated protein systems.

What researchers examine

Biophysical and proteomic studies have mapped SS-31 interactions near cardiolipin-binding regions and oxidative-phosphorylation proteins. In September 2025, the FDA granted accelerated approval to the pharmaceutical product Forzinity, containing elamipretide, for a specific Barth-syndrome indication.

Approved medicine versus research material

The approval applies only to that regulated product, indication, manufacturing system, and labeling. A Platinum Bio Labs SS-31 research vial is not Forzinity and is not represented as sterile, pharmaceutical-grade, or approved. Sequence, stereochemistry, counterion, purity, and aggregation remain independent variables.
