Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro and is commonly described as an analog derived from the ACTH(4-10) region.
What researchers examine
Rat studies have measured changes in nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene expression across the hippocampus, frontal cortex, and retina after Semax exposure. Other experiments have investigated binding and BDNF protein levels in the basal forebrain.
How to interpret the evidence
Region-specific gene-expression changes in rodents do not establish cognitive, neurologic, or clinical benefits in humans. Timing, route, species, tissue, and analytical identity all influence the reported effect. U.S. pharmaceutical approval is not represented for this research material.
