Why NAD+ is central to redox chemistry, and why it is not a peptide.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, is a nucleotide-derived coenzyme—not a peptide. Its oxidized NAD+ and reduced NADH forms participate in electron-transfer reactions throughout cellular metabolism.

What researchers examine

The NAD+/NADH couple links glycolysis, the tricarboxylic-acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, and many dehydrogenase reactions. NAD+ also serves as a substrate for enzymes including sirtuins, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases, and cyclic ADP-ribose synthases.

Identity matters

A catalog name of NAD+ does not by itself specify salt form, hydration state, oxidation state, degradation products, or assay purity. Those variables can affect mass calculations, solution behavior, and experimental interpretation. Researchers should verify the exact chemical form and use an orthogonal identity method.
